Iri -iji
Iri ji popularly known as New yam festival is an annual harvest festival by the Igbo people held at the end of the rainy season in early August, The Irji festival is practiced throughout West Africa (especially in Nigeria and Ghana) and other African countries and beyond, symbolizing the conclusion of a harvest and the beginning of the next farming cycle. The celebration is a very culturally based event, unifying individual Igbo communities together as essentially agrarian using Yam as a strong symbolism of the productivity of the Igbo people and the fertility of our soil. But over and above all, the Iriji festival is the biggest annual thanksgiving event which brings all Igbo sons and daughters together to render thanks to God for the gift of rich harvest and the continued fertility of our soil.
